“No matter how panoramic its scope, a view of surrounding countryside becomes a genuine garden picture only when it has been framed.”
– Penelope Hobhouse
At the last stop in Stockholm. we went to the Drottningholm Palace. This is only Palace I visit in Stockholm.
Framing a view is a common device in landscape architecture design. Certainly a frame controls, by directing our view. Sometimes the frame narrows what we see to a single feature. In the Drottningholm Palace, the garden emphasizes the important of the palace. With the same height of shrub, it is easy to divide sky and land. And also if you stand in the middle of the path. the shrub line is always lower than the main building. Secondly, I notice the color, the yellow-grey sand path, and green shrub. Both of them are similar with the Palace roof and facade, and frame view to the center. Lastly, the fountain is a good way to block the view, in other words, the fountain makes the forms become more variety, instead of leading your view directly to Palace.
