If the United Nations was Fully Funded Why Would We Need the Arc or Social Enterprise?

If the United Nations was fully funded why should we need the Arc or social enterprise? To answer this question, we should figure out what is social enterprise or Arc and what do they exactly do. They are all organizations equipped with professional commercial knowledge that try to fundamentally improve society. What they offer are not just money but something more important, knowledge and skills, which could be sustainedly beneficial. For example, Arc initiative run by Suader Business School is a program that brings professional commerce students and African entrepreneurs together to enhance their businesses. It does not directly lend them money but instead, addressing their problems, teaching them how to cope with specific business situation and helping them with the fund raising.

Fitih Tesfaye, owner of Shega Shero Eatery and Yana Sweets once came to the workshop held by Arc before she gained extreme success. She used to only operate Shega Shero Eatery, a restaurant that caters all age groups but lacks of differentiation. Moreover, with low entry barriers in food industry and increasing competitors, the restaurant soon confronted with operational difficulties. She was inspired by the workshop and decided to step into sweets business. Leveraging the strategy map she learned in the workshop, she quickly dominated the market.

Another example is Rick Pand and Majeje Bakery, where he worked. He is a student of Sauder Business School. He emphasized the bakery’s lack of revenues and expenses track and also pointed out the urgency of purchasing a new bakery machine.

Observing these examples, the question that mentioned at the beginning of this article can be dealt with. These organizations could work with the business for a period of time. As a member of the business, they are able to clearly put forward what’s the business’s weaknesses and what should it improve. Further than ensuring you are well-funded to run your business, they also make sure your money is used as efficiently as possible. They aim to bring maximum improvements to society, but they should at least guarantee that they are not out of pocket. Thus, in order to achieve win-win, both sides of the contract need to exert extreme effort and consequently, business could work most efficiently. On the other hand, most people living in poverty area do not have sufficient credit record to obtain the fund offered by the United Nations. Therefore, those social enterprises, which are not afraid of risk-taking become needed.
