W-w-w-w-what did you…advertise?

Have you ever spent a minute or two watching something funny, cool or whatever it might be that grabbed your attention, only to realize a minute later that it was an advertisement for something absolutely unrelated? I’m sure everyone has seen one too many of those around.

The Cadbury Eyebrows ad featuring two awkward-looking children is a prime example of those ads that have been ‘around.’ So we have two children doing clever tricks with their eyebrows to a 1980’s freestyle tune. What does this have to do with the product? Absolutely nothing. Then, it would make sense that the advertisement was not effective in accomplishing its purpose right? Wrong. In fact, this ad was not ‘just’ successful, it was very successful. When the Cadbury eyebrows ad comes on, many people will indeed stop what they were doing and watch and laugh at a minute of randomness. (I watched the ad about 6 times while writing this blog…) It’s silly, random, and could even be considered stupid. But it works. People tell their friends to watch the two kids with dancing eyebrows, and perhaps they don’t mention the actual product even once while talking about it. However, we will all remember (or at least some of us will) after watching the ad,  that it was actually advertising Cadbury chocolates. I must say, this is indeed a pretty clever way of creating brand awareness.
