According to Larry Pynn, the author of “Tsilhqot’in set to declare site of New Prosperity mine a tribal park”, Taseko Mine Limited is facing a couple of external factors regarding its plan on developing mines at Fish Lake. Using the PESTLE analysis, Taseko may be facing political, social, and environmental external factors.

Taseko may be facing political external factor, as First Nation declares Fish Lake property as part of the tribal park. This would perhaps result Taseko on having a harder time to be able to use the Fish Lake property to become its future mine site. Taseko may have to face numerous bureaucracy as the company has to go through the First Nations government to be able to get license and permit to use a part of their land for future development. This political external factor leads to the social external factor, as the natives also play a role on this factor.

The Social external factor aspect can be demonstrated from the Tsilhqot’in civilians as they claim Fish Lake as their land. The natives puts environmental concerns into play as they feel that Taseko’s plan would result in “clear-cut logging”, which would have a huge impact on the Native land’s biodiversity. Therefore, does Taseko have a right to use Fish Lake for mining as it negatively impacts the environment? Despite the fact that the court recognises the Fish Lake property to be Taseko Mines Ltd’s land. Thus, Taseko would have to adapt to the Native culture and concerns towards the environment, such as performing “sustainable logging”.

There are many external factors in my opinion that interrelate with each other and play a role in this controversial topic, which would lead Taseko to further improve upon its business plan to satisfy its stakeholders (ex: First Nations and the Natives).
