Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, I was constantly fascinated by the vast urban landscape that was constantly surrounding. Other than the occasional trips to the beach, or family vacation, all we had to aspire to was the hidden gems of this massive urban conglomerate. The city was our lives and we lived to explore its corners.
As soon as I went to University, I felt compelled to learn more about urban processes and how urban elements interact. Maps and flags became good hobbies too – and so, I knew that Geography was the major to be in.
Furthermore, coming from a rather underdeveloped nation, I was very interested in learning about group dynamics within society, how social problems come to be, and how to find solutions for them. I decided to minor in Sociology in order to further expand my mind into such themes.
All in all, the academic combinations of Geography (Environment and Sustainability) and Sociology have been connected in more ways than one. In a sense, all disciplines within the Arts compliment one another; however, with geography and sociology, it is as if one were understanding both the micro and macro perspectives of social lives – how processes have consequences and how such consequences manifests itself in social lives and the physical environment.
