My name is Yingying Wu and I am a third year Bachelor of Computer Science(BCS) student. I am originally from Shanghai, China but spent most of my adolescent life in Canada and the United States. For the past 12 years, I have lived/worked in Vancouver, Calgary, State College (a small college town in Pennsylvania), Seattle, Puerto Rico, and Fort Lauderdale.
The BCS program is my second bachelor degree. For those of you who don’t know about the program, it is a 20-month full time program offered to students who have already completed at least a bachelor’s degree in a field that does not overlap with Computer Science. My first degree was in Hospitality Management at the Pennsylvania State University. Upon graduation, I worked as a Revenue Manager for a major hotel chain for 3 years. I worked with a lot of Excel worksheets and different hotel systems. That was when I grew very fond of learning more about basic computer programming. I then took the initiative to apply to the BCS program and quitted my job after I received admission from UBC. I started my first semester last September and I have been enjoying all my courses so far. I am excited to learn more and am happy to be back to school!
Upon graduation, I intend to pursue a career in the Information Technology industry, preferably Machine Learning and AI. I believe the future of technology and society will heavily rely on the development around these two fields. That being said, I am open to exploring different aspects of the industry as I am still fairly new to the field. Thanks to the UBC co-op program, I can do exactly that. I am currently in the process of applying for a co-op position. I would really like to take this opportunity to discover the type of work I may enjoy once I graduate.
