Canadian Oil Sands – Which side are you on?

With the increasing demand for oil, climate change awareness and demands for more sustainable practices are also on the rise. The Canadian Oil Sands has been a controversial topic, as some look at the oil sands as a crucial part of our economy, while others criticize the government for allowing one of the biggest carbon footprints to occur in Canada. As Canada hopes to encourage trade by expanding pipelines into the US and possibly the Pacific Coast, many, including the US Congress, have voiced out environmental concerns.

Personally speaking, the Canadian government should not place so much emphasis on expanding the pipelines. Having already been criticized on international ground for lack of action towards the tar sands, Canada should focus and invest in more long lasting and sustainable ways to support our economy and earth. Once the oil is depleted, what will we do with the pipelines and how will we face the irreversible environmental damages?

Investment in Canada’s oil sands is picking up after falling during the depths of the global economic recession. However, mounting environmental concerns threaten exports and Canada’s next government will have a growing fight on its hands to promote the industry…
