YAMAHA’s business empire

YAMAHA is well-known as a musical instruments manufacturer, has a history of nearly 150 years. However, what most of people might not have known is that Yamaha is also a leading producer of audio/visual product, semiconductors and other computer related products, sporting goods, home appliances and furniture, specialty metals, machine tools, and industrial robots. Although those industries look irrelevant and totally different from each other, Yamaha still did very well in the past one century and even became dominator in some areas. For a company first start with musical instruments production, how can Yamaha set foot in so many irrelevant areas while kept successful. After research into Yamaha’s development till today, I believe its success has a crucial relation with its business culture.

yamaha's corporate philosophy

We learned organizational culture in the study of organizational behavior in chapter 10, which is defined as a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations. Organizational culture has plenty of functions, what makes Yamaha most unique in the world is its boundary-defining role which creates distinction between one organization and others.

Usually, a company’s culture can be obtained from its slogan, philosophy and objectives. Yamaha’s corporate philosophy is “providing excellence in our products and services; continuous efforts to expand our existing market and create new markets; enhancement of research and development on a long range perspective; pursuit of further globalization of Yamaha’s business; fostering positive growth through diversification….” Their objective is to contribute to the enrichment of the quality of lives for people around the world. Hence, it’s much easier to understand why Yamaha entered so many market while remain high quality of products and build a good reputation. Yamaha’s corporate culture encourages company to expand their existing market and create new market, and to achieve diversification in their products. Moreover, it doesn’t focus on the range of market only, Yamaha is more of a consumer-oriented company, so the quality of products and satisfaction of consumer is equally important. This is also reflected from its slogan, that enhancement of research and development on a long range perspective.

We can say that corporate culture has an essential impact on company, however, it is only part of the reason why Yamaha is so successful, the management and operation are things that makes objective come true.
