Hello, My name is Yusen Zhou. I was born and raised in China. I had my first bachelor’s degree of Marine science in Sun Yat-sen University. Now, I am studying for a secondary degree in Computer Science at University of British Columbia.
My academic and professional interest is software engineering. Software engineering is part of applied computer science. The difference between computer science and software engineering is that computer science focuses on the nature of calculation, and software engineering focuses on specific calculation design for purposes.
In software engineering, I like web development the most. I think building a website to provide service to people and the process to make it more efficient is very interesting. I had several internships as a software engineer, and I find that software engineering has great productive power and can make people’s life more convenient. For example, hundreds of people can build software to satisfy the demand of millions of people. Besides, programming is basically a process to transform your logic of problem solution to real code, and I have liked logical thinking since I was child. Machine Learning is also fascinating. It can help us find the relationship between attributes, and output the relationship as a useful model similar to a math function. I use it in my internship to train customers’ data to provide better advertisement suggestions to customers. There are lots of other interesting things in software engineering, such as computer games and home automation which I hope to explore one day. As a former marine science student, I am also looking forward to combining software engineering to port automation and ship automation because they are more and more popular.
All in all, these are my academic and professional interests and I can learn those interesting things during my study in UBC.
