Reflection Blog – Unit Two

Social Media

Each week is filled with new technical writing skills and though it seems like a lot to take in, every activity is a stepping-stone in the learning process. I appreciate this type of learning as we apply the theory from the readings immediately. This past unit taught me to build on my current LinkedIn profile, create a proposal and outline for my formal report and complete another peer review for a team member.

The LinkedIn profile proved wrong that it was like any other social media, such as Facebook or Twitter. The specialty of LinkedIn is that it is made for professionals to network, which is an ideal way for people to effortlessly get in contact with other professionals. I learned that it is not only a way to network but holds many other purposes that struck my interest such as endorsement acknowledgement and ability to join interest groups. I created a LinkedIn account when it first came into social media, but I didn’t take the time to understand its full potential. This activity helped me see the opportunities LinkedIn provides and I will be making better use of my account.

Our formal report is one of the biggest assignments and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous since it is a major component. The proposal and outline activities for the report really helped calm my nerves by taking a step-by-step approach in preparation of the report. I feel better than I have a vision and plan of how everything will come together. I work in a dental office and my initial proposal was about hiring a second hygienist for effective appointment scheduling. I decided to change my proposal to incorporate laser therapy for gum disease, as it is a problem I am more interested in as a dental hygienist.

Furthermore, the peer reviews have been extremely beneficial. I’ve learned that having the opportunity to hear feedback from another perspective is imperative as others can review my work from a different angle. I’ve learned that I need to practice writing my sentences logically and focus on the main point.

I have attached my initial proposal, as that is the one that was peer reviewed. I have also attached my new proposal with edits made from the instructor’s feedback.
