Reflection Blog – Unit Three
It’s hard to believe we are more than halfway done in the course! This unit brought motivating learning experiences including how to write with a “you-attitude” and plenty of progress with our formal reports.
Working with the concept of the “you-attitude” in complaint and bad news letters was certainly familiar but never accomplished in the past. There have been many instances when I have wanted to make a complaint but did not know how to address it and thus, many times I avoid confrontation. However, I learned that knowing the right way to talk to someone about a concern is the key to addressing a complaint. Moreover, there have been times when I do not know how to convey bad news and end up not saying anything or placing the blame on myself. The “you-attitude” taught me how to change negative, judgmental feedback into positive, constructive feedback. It also taught me to stay focused on the reader’s interests and needs rather than on the writer. With these concepts in mind, I feel comfortable addressing confrontation whether it involves a complaint or bad news.
Furthermore, the time given to work on our formal reports was much needed. Also, having the ability to peer review another report helped areas that I may need to improve on and helped guide my overall progress, as this is my first formal report. I learned more about structure as I reviewed my team member’s reports and learned ways to benefit my overall design. Being able to focus exclusively on our reports was helpful since it is a big assignment.
Unit 3 was informative and productive. I felt comfortable and at ease for having time to work on my report along with learning about and incorporating the “you-attitude”.
For some reason people won’t accept this idea as ture, but I absolutely have to really agree with you.
