#medlibs chat

At the most recent CHLA SIG at SLAIS meeting I gave a short presentation about gopubmed.org, explaining what it was and how it can be used by health librarians.

During the meeting, I was asked how I had learned about gopubmed to begin with. I explained that I had first heard of it during a medical librarians tweet chat session. The #medlibs tweet chats are a really neat way to interact with practicing health librarians all over the world, and I have found they are very welcoming to students.

For more information about #medlibs chat, visit their blog where they post what the upcoming topic is going to be and information about date/time.

Charles Woodward Memorial Room Tour

Do you love old books? If you do, you should come and check out the Charles Woodward Memorial Room and its history of medicine collection on Wednesday Oct 9 at 1:30 pm with the CHLA Student Interest Group at SLAIS.

We’re going on a tour of the Charles Woodward Memorial Room at Woodward Library. As some of you may know, the Memorial Room will be closing in the near future and its contents moved to the UBC Rare Books and Special Collections vault. Therefore, if you want to see this incredible history of medicine collection which includes books dating back to 1600s (such as Tabulae Anatomicae and others) in all its glory, this may be your last chance. For more info click here.

It won’t be a long tour (it’s just the one room), so if you do have a 2 pm class, you still should have plenty of time to attend and make it to class.

Space is limited, so please register now!

Hope to see you all there!

Beginning of Fall term – First Meeting

Hi everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful summer! It is that time of year again – the beginning of term, which means it’s time to reconvene CHLA SIG at SLAIS.

Our first meeting of the year will be on Wednesday September 11 at 5pm in the Trail Room in SLAIS.

We will be discussing potential upcoming events for the Fall semester as well as accepting nominations for several open positions on the CHLA SIG exec.

Hope to see you all there!

Grace Romund, CHLA SIG chair

Greetings from the new CHLA SIG executive for 2013-2014!

I wanted to introduce myself as the new chair of the Canadian Health Libraries Association Student Interest Group at SLAIS. Having worked in healthcare in my past life before SLAIS I knew that medical librarianship was a particular interest of mine coming into the program. To my great delight I discovered that there were others who organize opportunities for SLAIS students to interact with the specialized professional community of medical librarians through library tours, discussion panels, and other programming.

While you surely had a general interest in librarianship or information studies more broadly when applying to SLAIS, once you’ve begun your studies you realize that within library and information studies there is a great variety of potential careers as a librarian or information professional. Getting involved in the Canadian Health Libraries Association Student Interest Group at SLAIS and attending some of our events or meetings is a great way to one potential career path as a librarian.

Our group is also very open to any MAS students who would like to explore the role of an information professional in the medical field. Don’t shy away because it says “libraries” in the name of our association!!

Finally, we are still looking to fill a number of positions on our executive board for the 2013-2014 term. If you would like to really get involved in CHLA SIG at SLAIS we would love to find a space for you.

Wishing you all the best in the coming year of studies!!

Grace Romund
