Hi everyone!
Welcome to my blog (I’ve never done one of these before so this is exciting)
I’m Spencer Hunt and I’m a first-year arts student and I am hoping to major in History. I am from Calgary Alberta but I have always loved Vancouver because with the ocean and the mountains it is the best of both worlds. My favourite things are reading and history so I thought this class would be a perfect way to learn new things while also doing what I love. Having grown up in Canada I am not very familiar with translated texts and I’m looking forward to discovering new ways of learning and trying to find differences and similarities in the upcoming texts.
The structure of this course is very unique and I think I will enjoy the freedom and self-guided learning from reading and interpreting the books by myself and I look forward to seeing what everyone else brings to discussions. I have looked through the readings and already having a difficult time choosing which ones to read because they all look so interesting. Are we sure we can’t make time for all of them?
I’m looking forward to this semester and am hopeful that we can all meet in person soon!
Hi Henry!
It is really cool that you are from Calgary! I hope that you love Vancouver, it is really beautiful. You sound very eager about the course, great energy to bring!! May be asking you for some friendly advice on these upcoming readings!
Hi Spencer, thanks for posting! I agree with you that one of the main objectives of the course is to compare and contrast different pieces of literature in the romance world. Additionally, just as you do, I like the structure of the course as well because it gives us maximum flexibility of choice that allows us to meet our individual situations. Taking this into account, I think this format is relatively innovative as a literature course, making it even more fun. Good luck with the course!
Hey Spencer,
Question as an Ontario-(ite?). Do Albertans visit Vancouver often? Did you before you came to UBC?
Hi Coltrane,
It’s a fairly popular place and most people I know from big cities in Alberta have been at least once, less popular for people from small towns I think. I had only been one time before coming to UBC!
Hope you are enjoying Vancouver too.
Hi Spencer,
Is there any one surprise that you encountered when you moved to Vancouver from Calgary, Alberta? Were there any aspects of what you anticipated that turned out to be quite different from what you actually experienced? I completely agree with you that for me, the most fascinating thing about this course is the amount of creativity and freedom students are allowed to utilize to create their own path and choose to go at the pace they please.
I think the biggest surprise was the rain. I know everyone calls it Raincouver for a reason but coming from the dry climate in Calgary I don’t think I ever could have imagined this much rain! Before coming to UBC I was expecting the school to give off a big city vibe but since being here and living on campus it doesn’t feel like I’m in Vancouver at all, UBC is like its own little world.
