Welcome to Taxonomy

Welcome to the unit on Classification and Taxonomy.

While this is a fairly short unit with both online components, class components, and field work, we will be applying the ideas and principles we cover here throughout the rest of Biology 11. So, be sure to keep track of how your understanding shifts through exposure to different scenarios.

Goals and Learning Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of reasons and approaches to classification
  • Apply the principles of classification to the creation and use of Dichotomous Keys
  • Use a Dichotomous Key in the field and identify the advantages and limitations of Dichotomous Keys in the field

Tasks and Expectations

  • Complete the readings found in Taxonomy Pages
  • Create a dichotomous key using the embedded videos as guides
  • Participate in discussion forums with original submissions, as well as, provide feedback on your fellow learners entries
  • Identify and classify organisms in field in order to complete the Taxanomic Field Lab
  • Select three of the organisms from your field lab and provide a Taxanomic biography using the 7 Taxanomic levels
