We have updated UBC Blogs to WordPress 3.6.1 and during the upgrade we also decided to update the look and feel (which had not been refreshed since 2011).
From the functional perspective, everything remains the same, except that we are making access to groups and forums slightly less obvious as part of the long term plan to phase them out. These features have had very limited use while significantly adding to the complexity of running the service. Groups and forums can still be accessed through links in the footer.
We are planning to add more features that will not only provide better alternatives to groups and forums, but also add to the usability and application of this service for teaching, learning and for other needs.
With the new version of WordPress comes a new theme. Twenty Thirteen has a warm and colourful feel. It also features great typography and is mobile ready. Enjoy.
Twenty Twelve continues to improve over Twenty Ten and Eleven. Twenty Twelve theme for WordPress is a fully responsive theme that looks great on any device. Features include a front page template with a its own widgets, an optional display font, styling for post formats on both. Check it out.
This was long overdue but UBC Blogs now has the french language translation files enabled.
To enable this on your blog goto Settings-> General -> Site Language
Currently the following themes have translation files (more to come):
*Not all plugin and themes have multi language support so milage may very but if you are doing base content with the above themes there should be no issues.
Continuing our streak of adding more modern themes to UBC Blogs. This week I am happy to be adding two themes that both feature great typography and a responsive design.
First up is a very clean blog / portfolio theme called Ascetica by Griden.
Simple portfolio and blog theme with responsive layout, sticky posts slider, and a widget for presenting your work. The theme settings include options for uploading favicon and logo images, color picker, typography settings, and a nice selection of Google fonts.
Next up is Rumput Hijau which means ‘Green grass‘ in Indonesian. The theme was created by the talented M.Satrya.
Multidevice layout, optimized for mobile browsing, clean and search engine friendly WordPress theme focused on typography. Rumput Hijau supports Theme Customizer, also 5 widget areas, custom social share button, and facebook open-graph integration. Rumput Hijau also supports post-format(aside, gallery, link, image, quote, video), one-column & two-column flexible-width layouts.
Feel free to live a comment and let us know what you think about the new themes and if there is any type of theme you would like to see added in the future.
Another new theme today. This one is very tumblr’ish. Single column just about the content, features include a custom header, custom background, and maximum three widget areas in the footer.
Added a dark single-column theme with a minimal, techy feel. This theme supports custom background, header and menu. Also supports featured image and featured header.
It’s built by Automattic!
San Fran is a blogging theme focused on typography and content. Several different color schemes to choose from.
The typography and color are quite stand out – particularly the default orange color. Custom menu option are available.
Intuitive and easy to use theme option.
This weeks new theme is Responsive as you might guess by the theme name this theme is “responsive” (for those that do not know that just means it will adapt to the device size). That’s not all this theme has to make it awesome, it also comes with several customization features via the theme options where you can control the front page content, webmaster tools, custom css, logo managament, social icons and 4 navigation menus as well as 9 widget areas so you can really do something cool with this theme no excuses! I can see this theme working well for course, club/group sites.
