UBC Blogs Updates

WordPress 3.9.1 Maintenance Release

UBC Blogs has been updated to 3.9.1

From WordPress.org :

This maintenance release fixes 34 bugs in 3.9, including numerous fixes for multisite networks, customizing widgets while previewing themes, and the updated visual editor. We’ve also made some improvements to the new audio/video playlists feature and made some adjustments to improve performance. For a full list of changes, consult the list of tickets and the changelog.

XML-RPC Disabled

We have disabled XML-RPC across the network. This is is to prevent the UBC Blogs service from becoming a launch pad for DDOS attacks

Any WordPress site with Pingback enabled (which is on by default) can be used in DDOS attacks against other sites. Note that XMLRPC is used for pingbacks, trackbacks, remote access via mobile devices and many other features you’re likely very fond of. But, it can also be heavily misused like what we are seeing.

How will this impact users?

Users who have been using services like HootSuite or the native WordPress mobile apps will no longer be able to remotely post to UBC Blogs. Sites that have had pingbacks and trackbacks enabled will no longer be able to receive notices when someone has mentioned blog posts or has linked to your site.

UBC Blogs October 2013 Facelift

We have updated UBC Blogs to WordPress 3.6.1 and during the upgrade we also decided to update the look and feel (which had not been refreshed since 2011).

From the functional perspective, everything remains the same, except that we are making access to groups and forums slightly less obvious as part of the long term plan to phase them out. These features have had very limited use while significantly adding to the complexity of running the service. Groups and forums can still be accessed through links in the footer.

We are planning to add more features that will not only provide better alternatives to groups and forums, but also add to the usability and application of this service for teaching, learning and for other needs.

New Theme: Twenty Twelve

Twenty Twelve continues to improve over Twenty Ten and Eleven. Twenty Twelve theme for WordPress is a fully responsive theme that looks great on any device. Features include a front page template with a its own widgets, an optional display font, styling for post formats on both. Check it out.
