The King of Vancouver Destinations

This photo was taken at Granville Island Public Market. I chose to take a picture in this area because it is a popular tourist destination. Granville Island encompasses all that Vancouver has to offer, with its stunning views and cuisines from around the world. The picture illustrates travel and tourism because it was taken at “the king of Vancouver destinations” (Granville Island Public Market Website). Since the 1970s, the public market has been a must visit for people travelling to Vancouver.

In Mahrouse Ghada’s article “Feel-good tourism? An ethical option for socially-conscious Westerners” she discusses the topic of socially responsible tourism. This concept is something that Granville Island embodies. The market is geared toward making positive contributions to the community and enhancing tourists experiences when in Vancouver. A few characteristics of socially responsible tourism are being culturally sensitive, improving working conditions of locals, providing enjoyable experiences and making tourism more sustainable. All these traits are present at Granville Island. From eco-friendly services to culture rich festivals, Granville Island goes beyond what it means to be civically engaged.

Being socially responsible toward tourism is something that not all countries have the luxury to achieve. Several third world countries cannot afford to put the money and time into tourism. In June Jordan’s article “Report from the Bahamas” she examines what it means to be privileged. Many people around the world take “being privileged” for granted as it is a part of their daily life. In Vancouver we are lucky enough to be able to put effort into tourism. Granville Island has the benefit of contributing to Vancouver’s tourism and puts forth a cultural experience for many people to enjoy.
