The 1893 illustrated edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland I picked to focus this book blog upon comes from a very special collection in UBC’s Rare Books and Special Collections. It is from the Alice 100 Collection, which was named in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first printing of Alice in 1865. The collection was donated to the University of British Columbia in 1965 by the Class of 1925 in celebration of their own anniversary (the big 40)! It boasts over 200 editions of Alice in Wonderland, including a 1866 first edition signed by Alice Hargreaves (originally Alice Liddell), with over 500 books being collected by rare book collector, R.D. Hilton Smith.
The collection (and the edition we have been learning about) is available for public viewing in the Rare Books and Special Collections section of UBC’s library.
