Sauder Dean Search: Extension for Receipt of Feedback

The President’s Advisory Committee is still deliberating on the short-list candidates and has recommended that the deadline for receipt of feedback be extended to end of day on Monday, April 9.  The committee will review all the feedback received to that date, recognizing that the process may not have allowed sufficient time for everyone to reflect on their interaction with the candidates, following their visits to campus.

BASD 580B – Sustainable Transportation – P3 – Space Still Available

If you haven’t considered taking BASD 580B Sustainable Transportation prior to this, read on for a number of good reasons to add it to your P3 schedule….

In addition to those planning a career in transportation, logistics, or trade, BASD 580B holds value for those planning a career in manufacturing, energy and natural resources, construction, wholesale and retail sales, and consulting. In all of these fields, an understanding of transportation’s importance to the operations of those sectors and to the economy is important.

Moving from a once-weekly nightly session to a more favorable venue of twice-weekly daytime sessions, BASD 580B will be substantially enriched. Additional material will be added to Section I on:

  • Technology, including the major progress being made in:

(i) development of the electric powered vehicle – both in all-electric and hybrid-electric modes as well; this topic will be addressed by a speaker directly involved in improving the institutional and physical infrastructure needed to support the coming wave of electric vehicles; of automobiles with its implications for improved safety as well as the imposition of road use charges related to the nature of the vehicle, the type of road.

(ii) computerization being used, the time of use, and the amount of time spent on each particular trip.

  • Energy, including current market shares, forecast increases in energy use globally, challenges facing the transition of transportation to predominantly non-petroleum energy sources.
  • Financial issues, including sources of public and private revenue to support investments in roads, transit systems, and other transport infrastructure, as well as the costs and benefits of various investments.
  • Air and water quality issues that are affecting public health and marine life.

These changes will be introduced into the following sections:

  • Moving People: A strengthened focus on the economic and operational utility of various urban transit systems, as well as the economics of various modes of intercity travel –auto, motor coach, and rail.
  • Moving Freight: Opposition to the transportation of petroleum products by pipeline and petroleum tankers, including both crude oil and natural gas, from points of extraction to refineries and marine transfer points.
  • National Transportation Policy: An examination of a range of major policy proposals put forward in Canada’s neighbor to the south to renew and improve transportation in a time of ideological turbulence and financial austerity; Canada’s more methodical and effective approach will be examined in contrast.
  • Transportation Institutions and Their Governance: creating and sustaining effective institutions is at the heart of improving transportation. Selected utility and transportation-related institutions in British Columbia – BC Ferries, TransLink, Vancouver International Airport, and ICBC – and in the U.S. will be examined and evaluated, looking at strengths and weaknesses in performance, including operational, financial, and management systems, as appropriate.

Course Outline

BASD 580B Sustainable Transportation will be held in Period 3: 16 April – 25 May 2012 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00-4:00pm in HA 133.

Interested students can register for BASD 580B via SSC.
