BASM 501/502 Registration Reminder

Hello Students,

Just a friendly reminder that BASM 501 & 502 must be taken as a pair in Periods 2 and 3. Most importantly you must take the same section of both modules with the same instructor. For example, both BASM 501-001 and BASM 502-001 or BASM 501-002 and BASM 502-002.

BASM 501 and BASM 502 can really be considered as one continuous, 3 credit course. The instructors plan their material over the two sections, and for a student to get a grade in one section, they must attend the same section for the following module.

*Please note that it’s not possible to mix the sections and get credit for the modules.

Thank you for your attention.

Scheduling changes – FT Program Period 3 – BAFI 521 & BAUL 501

There have been a few changes to the FT MBA Schedule which may impact your registration choices on Monday.

We have moved BAFI 521 Financial Modeling to now be taught on Mon/Wed from 8am-10am (from its original spot on Mon/Wed 4pm-6pm). This was in response to significant demand from the Full-time class, particularly those students interested in Finance, who would like to take a combination of 3 modules: BAFI 521, BAUL 501 and BASC 511.

The only way for us to make all 3 of these modules available to students was by moving BAFI 521 to 8am-10am.

We realize that this may be an inconvenience to some students in the Part-time program who were planning on taking BAFI 521 in the 4pm-6pm time slot. We hope that those students will be able to re-arrange their work schedules to accommodate the earlier time slot, which will still take place at one end of the work day.

BAUL 501 Real Estate Investment Analysis is also a Finance elective, and will now take place in the Mon/Wed 4pm-6pm time slot, so this is also still an option for those Part-time students interested in the Finance specialization.

If you are planning on taking Finance, and are unsure if the BAUL 501 module would be of value or interest to you, I recommend you contact Murray Carlson (Finance Specializatoin Coordinator) or Tom Davidoff (Instructor for BAUL 501) for a more detailed recommendation.

Juggling a schedule such as ours with such a large number of elective modules is a challenge, and we thank you in advance for your understanding regarding this change.

National Investment Banking Conference – January 2012 – Early bird registration closes Dec 4th

This message is being posted on behalf of the NIBC Organising Team and Board of Advisors:

Dear Student,

We would like to invite you to the 3rd National Investment Banking Conference held on the 11th and 12th of January 2012 at the 5-star Pan Pacific Hotel. NIBC, with the generous support of major Canadian investment banks, is delighted to offer you an unparalleled 2-day experience, focused on the investment banking industry.

This year the conference will feature Mr. Ian Telfer, Chairman of the Board of Goldcorp Inc. as our Gala Dinner Keynote Speaker, along with interactive workshops on IPO, M&A, Private Equity, Hedge Funds, Sales & Trading, and a Trading Simulation. In addition to these workshops, we have arranged many opportunities for delegates to speak with industry professionals at events such as the Career Fair, Gala Dinner, Wine & Cheese, Open Q&A Panel, and evening social events.

NIBC represents the most sophisticated investment banking conference catered to students in North America and one of the best opportunities to learn about all aspects of investment banking while meeting like-minded delegates nationwide. Our ambition is to create a venue that attracts highly-driven students with an interest in investment banking to further their knowledge and build a strong network.

Sincerely,

The NIBC Organizing Team & Board of Advisors

Full-Time MBA Module Registration

Registration for Full-Time MBA Period 1-3 modules will open on Monday, November 28th at 4:30 pm and is on a first-come-first served basis.

You can register for modules by logging into the SSC with your CWL here: There are video tutorials at the bottom left side of the SSC website to guide you on how to register for modules. It is a good idea to log into the SSC ahead of time to familiarize yourself with this process so that you are prepared to register on November 28th.

When choosing registration, please consider the following:

  • If specializing, students should view the specialization requirements to determine which modules to take, and consider which modules are pre-requisites for other modules when making decisions. You will find specialization requirements here.
  • For module planning advice, students can email theresa.scott@sauder.ubc.ca to set up an appointment.
  • If a module is full, please email askmba@sauder.ubc.ca to get on the waitlist. Students often change their minds as to which modules they will like to take, and as seats open up in the full modules we will fill them from the waitlist.

Adding and Dropping Full-Time Modules

  • Students may add and drop modules (WITHOUT a “W” standing) by the end of the day
    on:

    • January 9th, 2012 for Period 1
    • March 5th, 2012 for Period 2
    • April 23rd, 2012 for Period 3
    • Students can withdraw with a “W” standing on their transcript January 10-16, 2012. A “W” standing simply means you have withdrawn from the course after the initial drop deadline and does not affect grade point average.

Exam Period

You will receive the exam schedule via email in week three or four of the Period. Students are not permitted to reschedule exams for any reason (other than medical). The full exam policy can be found on Vista (in the Policies folder)

PLEASE NOTE:  Full-Time MBA module exams may not be scheduled on the same date/time as the regular course is scheduled.

International Students – reminder to take the UBC i-graduate survey!

This message is being forwarded on behalf of James Ridge, Registrar and Associate Vice President, UBC Enrolment Services:

 Dear International Graduate Students,

Just as you receive regular feedback from us as you progress through your studies, we need to receive regular feedback from you.  The Student Barometer is your opportunity to tell us what’s working, what’s frustrating and what you think of your university experience to date.

The survey forms part of a wider ongoing study and is independently administered for the University by the International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate.org).

It should take you approximately  ten to fifteen minutes to complete the survey.

As a thank-you for completing the questionnaire, i-graduate offers the opportunity to win a $1,000 cash prize or suggest a $1,000 donation to charity.

In addition UBC is also offering  four lucky students the chance to win an iPad 2 or $500 in cash. Details are in the survey.

Please click the link for your chance to have your say and the opportunity to win one of the prizes.

http://survey.euro.confirmit.com/wix/p778921112.aspx

Your response, together with the response from others, helps us to improve the student experience for current and future students.   Your feedback will be combined with that of others and your name and email address removed, so that responses become anonymous.

The reporting process includes the text of any comments that you provide.  You are advised to avoid making comments that might enable you to be individually identified.  Further analysis may be done by UBC on the anonymized data and by taking part in the survey you agree to this.

If you want to know more about i-graduate, please go to http://www.i-graduate.org/privacy_policy.html to view their privacy policy and FAQs.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to tell us what you think of your university experience thus far,

James Ridge

Registrar and Associate Vice President, Enrolment Services
