CMA Merger & ramifications for 1st Year MBA Students

A proposed merger between the CA, CGA & CMA has been in the works for some time now, and we’ve just been notified by CMABC that the merger timeline will now happen much more quickly than anticipated. The merger is nation-wide and will see the CA & CMA (the CGA withdrew) join to become the CPA (Chartered Professional Accountants) designation. There is no formal relationship with the CPA in the USA, but they are working on reciprocal agreements.

We met with CMABC on Wednesday and the effect of this merger for you is that the CMA/MBA Combined Program is no longer available in its current form. Students who began the MBA program this year will not have the option to enter the CMA Accelerated Program as it will cease to exist after January 2013. Details about the new CPA program and what options might exist going forward are being discussed by the CMA on Oct 3rd, and we will organize for a representative to come and speak to you about the details in mid-to-late October.

The news of the merger is not widely known yet, but we are telling you about it as we know that some of you had been planning to complete the CMA/MBA requirements. We will be updating all our documents and information to reflect the fact that this program is no longer available.

Programs often make changes (as is evidenced by your own re-imagined MBA program), and when mergers occur there can be a transition time when programs or services previously offered are no longer available. The information about the timeline for the changes to take effect is still being finalized by the CMA so we were not able to inform you of it prior to this. We apologize for any disappointment this announcement may create and I would encourage you to direct any specific questions to Shannon Thompson at the CMA: shannon@cmabc.com – (604) 484-7066

Disruption in Access to Computer Labs on Saturday, September 22, 2012

Due to an electrical shutdown of the Henry Angus Office Tower on Saturday, they will be NO access to the computer labs (HA045A and HA045C) between 7:30-8:30am.  The purpose of the shutdown is to tie in components of the UBC power grid to our building and while services are expected to be back up at around 8:30am, you might want to (just in case!) find alternative ways for computer access.
