Defibrillator (AED) – Location & Usage at Sauder

Sauder officially houses a defibrillator (AED). It is located on the first floor of Henry Angus building (CPA Hall) right in front of the Business Career Center and next to the annunciator panel. Please note a security alarm will sound when you open the panel to use the device.

Other campus locations are as follows: http://riskmanagement.ubc.ca/health-safety/first-aid/buildings-aeds

The AED is to be used in the event of a medical emergency where someone is experiencing cardiac arrest.

Please familiarize yourself with how to operate this device by watching a short video which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R336zGS2aTE.  Please note that the device will also instruct you step by step on how to use the AED when engaged.

In the event of a medical emergency, please first call 2-4444 or 9-11 to ensure the fire department and/or paramedics are dispatched immediately.

When a person’s heart unexpectedly stops beating it is called sudden cardiac arrest.  Sudden cardiac arrest strikes anyone, anywhere, anytime.  Sudden cardiac arrest strikes 40,000 Canadians each year and is a major cause of death in British Columbia.

A cardiac arrest is a failure of the heart’s electrical system.  Nearly all cardiac arrest victims will die without an electric shock to restart their heart.  Time is critical.  Without immediate treatment, the victim can suffer brain damage within 3 minutes and will rarely survive past 12 minutes.

An Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, is a portable, safe and easy-to-use device to restart the heart.  It delivers an electric shock that starts a heart beating normally again. The AED can’t do harm and will not accidentally shock someone. The AED reads the heart rhythm and only delivers a shock if needed.

AEDs are safe and designed so that anyone can use one if they see someone suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.

Thank you for taking the time to familiarize yourself with this important piece of life-saving equipment.

Best wishes,
