Content Module Reflection

Completing the content module assignment has been a very eye opening experience and have highlighted some of the difficulties associated with teaching in an online or blended learning environment for me.  As I was completing assignment 2 and setting up my WordPress site I had great ambitions of creating a very interactive environment where students could login and participate in a class that was set up more like a social media site with the use of certain plugins.  I was also going to hopefully use this same plugin to run different discussion groups and auto assign projects and assignments.  What I found when it actually came time to try out the plugins that I researched was that some of them had changed drastically since the description that I had found posted.  The other thing that I found was that some plugins were not very user friendly and actually quite challenging to even begin to use.  Even the forums and YouTube tutorials were not helpful in some instances and I had to abandon my great plan, other times I was able to make the plugin work, but not in the way I had initially imagined.

I suppose the problems I encountered creating an online learning environment aren’t that different from the challenges I face in my classroom as I design a new unit.  Often times I think that there should be a plethora of valuable resources on a certain topic through my school library, district subscription sites or just found on a simple internet search and what I find is quite disappointing.  My unit gets developed, and eventually taught, but maybe not in the way I initially envisioned it. Sometimes my units turn out better than anticipated and other times worse.  Being able to adapt seems to be just as important when teaching online as it is when teaching in the classroom.  Knowing when to abandon an idea or concept, and when to keep plugging away and finding a way to make it work were very important for me as I prepared the content module.

Digital Story

What I really enjoyed about this assignment was the exposure to work with different programs and apps that I hadn’t been previously exposed to.  When looking at the list of possibilities there were a number of websites that  have used previously either in my classroom or in one of my courses in my MET journey so far.  Edpuzzle is one that I had never heard of, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to use, and how useful I see this program in my classroom.  I love using YouTube videos and clips in my teaching.  I find that it breaks up my speaking to the class and that engages the kids in a bit of a different way.  What I sometimes found frustrating was that I didn’t necessarily want to show the entire video and was stuck using a number of programs to cut the video down.  This was time consuming and cumbersome to a large degree.  With Edpuzzle this is quite easy to do.  I didn’t even have to bother downloading the video from youtube to begin with, I could just edit online.  I love that I could also add my own voiceover if I wanted and add question throughout the video.  This is a great way to focus students.  I can certainly see this being a very helpful site in my teaching practice.

However, what I loved most about this week was not learning about another site, it was actually looking at the projects that took a different approach and shared their personal digital stories.  I find that sometimes when we are working in an online environment the personal aspect can be somewhat lacking.  Sure we comment on each others posts, but we don’t really have conversations and get to know each other and learn about them in a different way.  This assignment afforded some peers to be open and honest about their digital journey and what they have learned.  If I had to do the assignment over again, I would probably reconsider my approach and share my digital story.

Wiki Collaboration

I think Wikis are great places where people can come together and discuss topics that are of interest to them.  It has great potential for teachers to connect with others who are working in similar fields as they are that live across the world or work in neighbouring school.  The problem with wikis is that they really depend on collaboration in order to be great.  In order to have collaboration other people need to be involved as it is pretty hard to collaborate with yourself.  The week that we were supposed to work on the Wiki collaboration I posted my thoughts on my LMS early in the week.  I checked back several times throughout the week to see if anyone else had added content, which they hadn’t.  This means 1 of 2 things… either I am the only one in the class who is using this specific LMS, or that other people chose not to participate.  Either way, it left me collaborating with myself, which defeats the purpose of collaboration, and is really one of the down sides of Wikis.  I have used Wiki’s in the past, and will probably continue to use them in the future in my classroom as I do find them useful.

Introductory Module Reflection

As I was working through this assignment it became quite clear to me the daunting task that some teachers have when they set out to set up an online course.  This is quite an ambitious task.  What I really appreciated about this assignment were the guiding questions that directed me through the process of thinking about the elements that I would need to include in my course in order for it to be a meaningful course.  I found it most effective to start working with bullet points under the outline I copied from the assignment description.  It took quite a lot of time to work through these points making sure that I had all the components of the course set out.

As I was trying to set up my WordPress site through UBC’s blogs I quickly realized that I needed more freedom to customize my site in order for it to work in the way I wanted.  I chatted with one of the Technology helping teachers within my district and he suggested hosting the WordPress site through our district.  This way he could leave the site open for me to customize the theme and add the plugins that I needed to make this work for me.  Had it not been for my ability to host the WordPress site on the district intranet, I would have either had to change the platform to something other than WordPress, or I would have had to change the design and vision of my course.

Once I had my platform issues figured out, I decided that I would take a look at BC’s new curriculum and start to set up a course that I would actually be required to teach and rework within the next year when the curriculum changes.  This assignment provide the perfect opportunity to really dive into the curriculum and see where the changes lie and where I have some existing material that will need to be tweaked.  Normally when developing a course or restructuring units I work with a colleague or two and we split the work in ways that play to our strengths.  I chose to do this all on my own for various reasons, and even through the process of working through the layout, I can see that I have my work cut out for me.  At the end of this course, I will have a good start on a new unit that I can teach when BC’s new curriculum is implemented in the fall.

Platform Evaluation Reflection

I always find it very informative when working with peers on an assignment. Naturally we all come to an assignment with different backgrounds, educational history and life experience. It is through projects like this, which force us to learn more about each other that our perspective on topics can often change. For this particular assignment I chose to evaluate WordPress as a possible online learning platform. I chose it for a number of reasons, one of them being that my district supports WordPress and hosts WordPress sites on our intranet. Because of this, I am somewhat familiar with this platform, but would also like to use more inclusively in my teaching practice. Through discussions within my group I became aware that many people actually find WordPress cumbersome and not as user friendly as other platforms like Weebly for instance.   I personally had never considered using Weebly in my classroom, but think that I should at least consider it.

Any time a group of individuals is working together on a project there are certain difficulties that arise. In my experience within this program the same set of difficulties is present in every group. Since we are all professionals, with work, family and other commitments coordinating time to work on a group project is always an issue. Add in working with individuals from multiple time zones and synchronous communication may not always be possible. Through this I have learned that even though completing a project through asynchronous communication may take additional time and effort, it is entirely possible.

Hello all and welcome to my ePortfolio.  On this blog I will be posting all of my assignments for ETEC 565A as I complete them.  ETEC 565A is part of the Masters in Education Technology program at UBC. In this course we will learn to evaluate learning technologies and how best to develop an online learning course.
