301 Technical Writing
Vancouver, CA
Dear 301 Technical Writing class,
Please consider my application to be a professional writing team member as a part of your team. I am currently a fourth-year computer science student at the University of British Columbia. Some of my professional interests include software engineering, healthcare and crypto.
In my past role, I worked as a research assistant at the Renal and Cardiovascular Lab at the University of Illinois. Through this experience, I wrote many research proposals that examined the efficacy of non-pharmacological inventions on the quality of life of people with chronic kidney disease. This experience allowed me to combine my science background with my writing skills to complete tasks at hand.
As a writer, I am aware of many strengths and weaknesses I possess. Some of my strengths as a writer are having good focus, and coherence throughout my writing. Each piece of my writing is focused on a central idea, and each paragraph contributes to that idea in some way. By having good focus throughout my writing, I can tie together all on my ideas to make a strong point to the reader. Moreover, my writing is always coherent. My writing is organized in a way that is logical to read, flows smoothly, and is understandable to the reader. Some of my weaknesses are word choice and creativity. With English being my second language, I struggle with finding the right words to put in my writing. This leads me to reusing a word often throughout my writing, which can result in repetition. As for creativity, I often struggle with coming up with ways to express certain ideas or thoughts in a different lens. My writing lacks my own imagination sometimes, which can make the writing piece weak to an extent.
My learning philosophy is that any skill can be mastered if someone works hard enough at it. Coming from a different country, I have worked hard to improve my writing skills, both strengths and weaknesses. My work habits have gotten me to where I am as a writer today which include asking questions and trying my best. Whenever I do not understand a concept, I always ask for more clarification. By doing this, I can better grasp the concept and be less likely to make mistakes in the future. In addition, I always do my best to any task assigned to me. I try to perform to the best of my ability to complete a given task, regardless of difficulty.
If my skills and background meet your needs, please feel free to contact me at ahasan33@student.ubc.ca
Sincerely,
Ali Hasan
