Unit Three Reflection

After completing my formal report draft, I feel I learned more in regards to how to research, organize and write a full report surrounding a topic of interest. In terms of researching, I learned how to find and utilize primary data research in order to support my topic. By doing this, I was not only able to learn more about my topic, but was able to utilize this research in order to strengthen my paper. I was able to gain more expertise on my topic too by doing research.

In terms of organizing, I learned that with a clear organizational pattern throughout a paper, it allows the reader to become less confused and more interested in the writing. In other words, it allows readers to stay focused, and draw connections between the paragraphs throughout the paper. Throughout my formal draft, I utilized this learning and organized my paper with headings and subheadings. By organizing my paper this way, it allows readers to understand the material better, and allows myself to express my ideas in different paragraphs.

In terms of reviewing peers, I have learned that by reading and providing feedback to others has improved my own writing. Through the peer review process, I am able to view and understand my strengths and weaknesses more in depth. Moreover, when feedback is given from peer-review, I am able to work on my mistakes more, and learn from them.

Unit 2 Reflection

Researching and creating a LinkedIn Profile

For assignment 2.2, we were tasked to research and create a post regarding the best practices of LinkedIn. Having had a LinkedIn account since my first degree, I have used the platform to showcase my experience and qualifications. In addition, I have used the platform to find new opportunities, network with current and former co-workers and learn new skills. However, this assignment allowed me to dive deeper into what goes into an effective LinkedIn profile and experience. Through this assignment, I learn better techniques and tips on how to make my LinkedIn more effective towards employers. With these techniques and tips, I made changes to my existing profile and now with the tips I had read and implemented, my profile has become better. As someone who plans to become a Software Engineer and one day, a business owner, I am excited to see where my LinkedIn profile takes me.

Peer Review Process

The peer review process has allowed me to look at my writing in a different light. I have been able to see what some of my strengths and weaknesses are through peer review, as well as see different writing techniques through some of my peer’s writings. I was able to implement and improve upon many improvements Varneega had pointed out to me. One improvement I was able to improve upon was adding more background knowledge to the company I was writing to. She pointed out that a preface to the company, Jasper, would be important to readers and provides sufficient background knowledge to the proposal. Another area I continue to struggle but improve upon is my grammar and spelling. I have always struggled with grammatical and spelling errors, but because of peer review’s, I am able to see it more transparently. With all this in mind, I would say the peer review process is a helpful and effective writing tool to strengthen an individual’s writing. My writing has strongly benefited from peer reviews, and I look forward to more!

REVISED Formal Report Proposal – Feasibility of a Fully Remote work model

Peer Review of  the Formal Report Proposal

Reflection

Through this assignment, I was able to improve upon my technical writing skills by taking a relatively complex term and breaking it down into three different definitions: parenthetical, sentence and expanded. Moreover, I was able to revise my own definitions using feedback from my partner, as well as provide constructive feedback to her assignment.

While writing this assignment, I decided to choose a term that is brought up daily in the technology sector. I felt this term was important to touch on, because of the way technology is evolving and the need for individuals to know the meaning of the term. After looking at the textbook and the examples it had, I felt confident in the content displayed throughout my writing, as well as the way my writing was structured. However, after reading my partner’s constructive feedback, I was wrong in many places. Throughout the assignment, I had several grammar issues, and some of the content I had written was repetitive. With this in mind, I decided to delete and rewrite some of my sentences in order to combat both of these issues that were pointed out.

To conclude, I have learned that it is important to always have an extra set of eyes take a look at your work. I had felt confident in my work, but I was lucky to have a partner that was able to pinpoint the mistakes throughout my assignment. While peer-reviewing my partners, I often re-read her work, asking myself questions in terms of how I can improve this writing. I felt I could have applied this technique to my own writing process, while writing my own assignment. With this in mind, I realized I will be using this technique in the future assignments, as well as to improve my technical writing skills.

301 Technical Writing

Vancouver, CA

Dear 301 Technical Writing class,

Please consider my application to be a professional writing team member as a part of your team. I am currently a fourth-year computer science student at the University of British Columbia. Some of my professional interests include software engineering, healthcare and crypto.

In my past role, I worked as a research assistant at the Renal and Cardiovascular Lab at the University of Illinois. Through this experience, I wrote many research proposals that examined the efficacy of non-pharmacological inventions on the quality of life of people with chronic kidney disease. This experience allowed me to combine my science background with my writing skills to complete tasks at hand.

As a writer, I am aware of many strengths and weaknesses I possess.  Some of my strengths as a writer are having good focus, and coherence throughout my writing. Each piece of my writing is focused on a central idea, and each paragraph contributes to that idea in some way. By having good focus throughout my writing, I can tie together all on my ideas to make a strong point to the reader. Moreover, my writing is always coherent. My writing is organized in a way that is logical to read, flows smoothly, and is understandable to the reader. Some of my weaknesses are word choice and creativity. With English being my second language, I struggle with finding the right words to put in my writing. This leads me to reusing a word often throughout my writing, which can result in repetition. As for creativity, I often struggle with coming up with ways to express certain ideas or thoughts in a different lens. My writing lacks my own imagination sometimes, which can make the writing piece weak to an extent.

My learning philosophy is that any skill can be mastered if someone works hard enough at it. Coming from a different country, I have worked hard to improve my writing skills, both strengths and weaknesses. My work habits have gotten me to where I am as a writer today which include asking questions and trying my best. Whenever I do not understand a concept, I always ask for more clarification. By doing this, I can better grasp the concept and be less likely to make mistakes in the future. In addition, I always do my best to any task assigned to me. I try to perform to the best of my ability to complete a given task, regardless of difficulty.

If my skills and background meet your needs, please feel free to contact me at ahasan33@student.ubc.ca

Sincerely,

Ali Hasan
