Orientation Week Information

Orientation Week 2015

Day 1 of Orientation 2014

These were some of the events held last year that will give you a taste of what to expect for Orientation 2015:

Dean’s Banquet – Held at the Hyatt in 2014, this is typically one of the favorite events of O-Week. Though formal-wear isn’t required, students are typically dressed to the nines and treated to an incredible meal, in inspirational speaker and the company of fellow students and a faculty member at their table.

Kick-Off Party – Also on campus, at the legendary (and nearby) Koerner’s Pub, students can loosen their ties and swap their heels for flats and dance the night away. Rumor has it a live band may be filling the airwaves…

LSS Wrap-Up Party – Put on by the Allard Law Students’ Society (ALSS), this event is held on the last night of Orientation Week. Students have a chance to meet, greet, and dance alongside other incoming Allardians.

Musqueam Welcome – The Allard School of Law is a leading institution in aboriginal legal studies, and we have a substantial aboriginal student population, a popular Indigenous Law Students Association (by both aboriginal and non-aboriginal students alike), and a number of decorated academics and practicing lawyers in the field of aboriginal law. In addition, the UBC campus is located on traditional Musqueam land. Aboriginal culture and heritage are a major part of what make Allard School of law what it is, and this welcome session during orientation week is meant to honor that connection, and usher incoming students into the program. Musqueam Elder Larry Grant blesses and welcomes the incoming students, and they are typically treated to a performance by a traditional group of Musqueam singers/dancers called the Coastal Wolfpack.

Meet Your Professors – Students get a chance to meet their first year professors and learn about the curriculum they will be covering in the coming months.

Careers Panel – The Peter A Allard School of Law has one of the most exceptional career development departments in Canada. Get a chance to meet the ladies behind the legend, and learn from alumni about the various paths available for a jd student post graduation.

Academic Information – Students are typically regaled by both professors and upper-year students about the tricks of the trade. Bring a pen an paper to these sessions!

NEW THIS YEAR

Vancouver Adventures – Students will have a chance to explore the amazing city we live in through one of a number of activities, including cycling, hiking, sea-kayaking, a tour of downtown and hanging out at a board game cafe downtown!

OutLaws Social – Taking place in vibrant Davie Village, this intimate social is open to all students, and is meant to welcome and encourage the presence and participation of all LGBTQ+ students in the Allard Community.

Beach Day – A number of upper year students will be waiting on the sun-soaked shores of a Vancouver West beach waiting to welcome you on Thursday evening. There will be volleyballs, footballs, frisbees, great company and an even better view.
