Unit One Reflection

In this chapter, we have learned many techniques to write professionally and effectively in workplaces. The instructions and suggestions for the definition assignment were very straightforward, which made the drafting part very easy for me.

Peer review has always been challenging because I don’t always know how to point out my peers’ weaknesses. I think people all think differently, and as long as they put adequate effort into the work, it is good enough for me. I always tend to give more compliments than criticize for peer reviews. However, I know what my peers want from me is to tell them how they can be improved relatively. Therefore, I gave my peer a more detailed review for some minor flaws because the work already met all the requirements.

The revision part was relatively easy for me because I followed templates (from the textbook) in terms of the structure and content of my assignment. According to my peer review partner, my work was overall good, but a small conclusion for the assignment was missing. Thus, I added some conclusions based on my understanding and experiences on the definitions. I also went through other classmates’ revised assignments to see anything I could add to my writing. Then, I slightly edited my expended definition by giving a subtitle to every paragraph to help the reader locate the answers to some questions.

Overall speaking, I liked the entire process, and I believe providing quality peer reviews is vital in both academic and career aspects. I am looking forward to more peer review activities due to both help I could give and get from my classmates.

Class of ENGL 301
University of British Columbia

Subject: Professional Writing Team with the class of 2021 (summer session)

Dear Team,

Does your team need an enthusiastic, reliable, and respectful ESL communicator with a multi-lingual background and great interest in languages? If so, please consider my attached materials. As an international student who speaks English as a second language, I believe my quick adaptation ability, fair English writing experiences, multi-culture background, and excellent communication skills would be a perfect fit for the team. The higher-level English courses I have taken in the last two years are English Grammar and Usage, Studies in the English Language, two of The Structure of English, and Children’s Literature.

Through the study of Children’s Literature, I have interpreted the differences in the English language for different prospected audiences and readers; I have written and edited few passages for children. In the Studied in the English Language, I studied English language differences in terms of accents, and I have written professional research projects for my studies. In the Study of English Grammar, I have written to the English Communication Committee to deliver the ESL perspective on English Grammar. I did not have much English background before I came to Canada in 2014, but I have read and written numerous essays and papers in the last two years of my journey in UBC.

I was told I am a faster learner and an enthusiast language learner by my Spanish teacher. I love communicating with people, and studying different languages allowed me to share with more people. I have always been respectful, optimistic, organized, and reliable along my way of learning and working. However, as an international student, my vocabularies are relatively limited compare to local students, and I may read or write slower as well.

You are always welcomed to email me with further questions.

Sincerely,

Alroy Huo

Course Overview

English is the most used language globally, even though more than half of English speakers are speaking English as a second language. Some people learn English for education purposes, and some learn for business purposes. English 301 is a high-level English course on the UBC Vancouver campus mainly focused on business writing purposes. It is not only for students who aim to improve their writing skills but also for those who want to further their working knowledge.

English 301 is open to all the students on the UBC campus without discipline limitations. Students will learn how to communicate online and written professionally and effectively through textbooks and “lectures” composed by professors. The course is designed to get students fully prepared for entering their careers after graduation.

The course also involves team working for practical purposes, including peer review, discussion, and team assignments in order to prepare students for understanding and communication within a team or a company.

By the end of the course, students should be able to develop a full set of skills of business preparation through a resume, references, reflection, and complete networking profiles like LinkedIn and Web Folio.

As an ESL student, I expect to improve my writing skills for both academic and business purposes, which will help me pursue my future business and activities in Canada. I’ve taken few more high-level English courses to help me in the past, and I believe English 301 will help to improve my English to the next level.  Moreover, I think English 301 will help me prepare to enter the real world in terms of my career since I finish my degree at the end of August. With the rapid development of technology, we write more times than we speak for important information. Thus, writing skills become critical for communication and expression, and I want to be an “expert” communicator when it comes to my career.
