The knowledge that I have gained through this FNIS 100 course on Indigenous foundations has been not only practical and applicable, but also inspirational. I have learned how to properly define and distinguish between many different terms (such as the difference between Indigenous and First Nations), while also exploring much deeper topics – a few of which include Indigenous sovereignty, treaty and land rights, and the intergenerational impact of Canadian residential schools. It has been unlike any other course that I’ve taken in the way that it has used history, politics, and culture to critically analyze contemporary issues between Indigenous peoples, settlers, and the colonial nation state.
Of the many topics covered throughout this course, I have been able to connect nearly all of them to another course I am taking or another interest of mine. The depth of this course is very apparent in its ability to be applied to so many other fields of discipline, considering the relationship between Indigenous peoples and settlers is the foundation for what is now colonially understood as “Canada.” I have been able to apply this knowledge to my anthropology courses in better understanding the individuality of the cultures in each nation; to my political science courses in recognizing the colonial nature of our structures of government; to my gender, race, sexuality, and social justice courses in understanding that Indigenous issues must be addressed before all others when discussing the origins of race and culture oppression in North America; and, above all else, to better understand the privilege I exercise each day to live on this land that does not belong to me, but feel so fortunate to call “home.”
I would recommend this course to anyone, regardless of major or discipline. It is not only foundational knowledge for all Canadians, but necessary in moving towards reconciliation in the future.
