One of the skills that has benefitted me through both of my academic and athletic careers has been my leadership skills. I have been the captain of multiple sports teams throughout my life and have aspired towards a high-level of achievement in every academic setting, and was awarded the Leadership 11 course award in high school. Most of my work experience has involved coaching, refereeing, or leading summer camps, allowing me to transfer my leadership skills to a setting of employment. I am willing and able to take the lead when necessary, yet ensure the rest of my team (on or off the court) contributes and thrives in any and all situations.
Another skill that has allowed me to achieve great things in my life is my determination and work ethic. When I set a goal for myself I will do everything in my power to meet it, and understand that good fortune is more often attributed to work than luck. An example of this would be going from being cut from the provincial volleyball team in 2013 (a team comprised of the top 32 players in BC), to hiring a personal trainer, working as hard as I could in the weight room and on the court for the next year, and being ranked as the #15 player in BC in an annual article published by The Province the following year (see link here). My work ethic has also led my to achieving an Academic All-Canadian Award for the 2015-2016 school year at UBC, an award issued to varsity athletes with an 80% or greater average.
Finally, a skill that has contributed to my success as a student is my written communication skills. I greatly enjoy writing literary papers which require presenting an argument and analyzing the topic critically, and believe this will contribute to my future career path in law. I love finding ways to convince readers of my opinion while using quality research as evidence, which is part of the reason I have been so passionate about the various Arts courses I have taken here at UBC. I have attached a link to a Political Science paper I wrote in first term of this year as an example of this skill.
