What I learned from making the cover video is that there is a lot of careful planning and tremendous amount of work required for every party involved in a music video. The artists had to practice the choreography, sing and record the parts they were assigned, and perform multiple takes of different angles and shots on filming day. For filming, the producers had to think about location, styling and makeup, and film techniques such as angles and transitions. There were a lot to equipment to prepare and bring, and many changes had to be made on filming day to improve on our initial plans.
My work for this video was mostly involved with the artists, while other members took on directing, editing, and production. To describe what I learned about being an artist in more detail, I can start with my experience of learning and practicing the choreography. Although it was only a simple, 30 second part of the entire track, I learned how difficult it was to learn each move and technique, especially without prior basic training. It took many hours of slow practice just to get my dancing to a somewhat acceptable level.
Recording all the parts of the song was challenging as well. Although I didn’t have a part to sing, I was there on recording day to oversee the recording process and help out with the setup. Everyone had to record their parts multiple times, since some of the parts were difficult to sing especially for those who took on a challenge to sing in Korean. A couple of the members even had to learn short Korean parts for an impromptu recording of parts that we didn’t initially plan for. In conclusion, making the cover video taught me to appreciate the great talent, effort, and commitment of K-pop artists.
