Cover Video Essay – Jonathan Janson

Reflecting on everything my group and I have done for this cover video, I can definitely say that taking the role as a director, dancer or singer were equally as difficult, which made me appreciate K-pop stars and their entertainment companies much more.

In our cover video, I took part in the singing and dancing, which made me realize that being a K-pop star wasn’t as desirable than I had anticipated it to be. For singing, I had to constantly repeat the same 23 second verse a thousand times because it either sounded too quiet, too mellow, or off-beat. In addition, I felt a lot of pressure when I was trying to do my verse because everyone who took part in the singing sounded really good and I didn’t want to be the one to ruin the audio. For dancing, I can say that I was worst from my group, which made me feel extremely guilty because I could tell that everyone put in a lot of effort in practicing the choreography. I also felt a lot of stress and pressure while filming the cover video because I was one of the main reasons to why we had to redo certain scenes since I would dance off-beat, forget a dance move, or accidently disappear from the shot.

In conclusion, being a K-pop star isn’t as desirable as I expected it to be with the amount of stress, pressure, effort and practice that is required to impress their audience. In addition, I’ve also understood why some K-pop artists would want to go solo because it reduces the amount of stress and pressure on having to rely on other members to perform equally as well as them. Overall, I’ve learned to appreciate every K-pop artist and their entertainment companies for their work.
