Hi, my classmates !

Since we have been talked about globalization in both sociology class and geography class. Today I want to share some of my own idea on the identity of international students, which I would like to connect with The Reluctant Fundamentalist. I will also talk about the identity of global citizens and national identity.

In my opinion, international students have a special identity in this world. Since they come from different countries with different culture, the new environment has an unavoidable effect to these international students, such as culture shock. Just like what Changez said “I was looking with me at an eye of foreigner. ”(124) But at the same time, international students or the students who have a different culture background also have a proud of their own culture and identity. I argue that is the result of their national identity. They may can judge their own country by any way they like. But if others with different national identities try to have any judgment, people with same national identity are more likely to get together to fight with those “outsiders”. So even though the globalization have loomed the national identities and gives people more chances to get to different place to live such as international students and immigration, the original national identities still can not be easily erased. If we change national identities into regional identities, there are also the same result. For example, east coast of Canada also have culture difference from west coast of Canada. So globalization can shrink the geographical distance but the cultural distance can hardly be shrunk.
