I pride myself on my writing. As a historian, my studies centre on academic writing. As a novelist, I am highly skilled in appealing to a general audience. Here are some works that highlight my writing.
History Thesis. I wrote a 50-page academic paper reconstructing a historical event that had never before been thoroughly documented: the Bay Fleet Capture of 1449. I read hundreds of archived sources from the fifteenth century and reviewed modern scholars’ arguments to present a definitive documentation of the event. My thesis went above and beyond the faculty’s expectations and was issued a rare unconditional pass, meaning the university was willing to publish it as-is. For more on this thesis, click here.
Anti-Racism Article. I wrote an article for the Okanagan’s Asian-Canadian community about how storytelling and oral history can be tools for anti-racism. I researched the psychological impacts of oral history for those in minority groups and storytelling strategies that increase audience engagement. I condensed my research into one short article that was accessable for elders with poor English skills. For more on this project, click here.
Club Policy Manual. I wrote a policy manual for the Historical Arts and Combat Club at UBC Okanagan. Before the manual, the club was incredibly unstable because executive members struggled to learn how to run it effectively. They were vaguely required to abide by several unspoken agreements, over 7 policy documents from three organisations, and two insurance policies that they could only access through a third party. I condensed hundreds of pages of legal jargon into a 35-page guidebook and rewrote them in plain English (with citations to the original sources) so future executives can learn what they need to know to keep the club above water.
Spoken and Visual Communications
I am comfortable before a crowd and skilled at commanding the audience’s attention. I have learned to play upon listener’s interests through my experience educating visitors at museums and teaching martial arts. I was also a founding member of the Speech and Interview Club at UBC Okanagan.
I am well practiced in digital design. Throughout my career in clubs and courses, I have designed countless posters, slideshows, maps, videos, and websites.
