The patent fight of daraprim

The author has a clear and concise content which correctly described business ethic. The drug “Daraprim” benefits the whole society, especially those Aids patients, and brings those patients normal lives. The author did a good job in relating her examples to the topic and citation was correct.https://blogs.ubc.ca/clairechen1/

Martin Shkreli’s action definitely disobeyed content of business ethic. As a successful company or businessman, he should help the society while making profits. However, Martin Shkreli’s action harmed public, especially those Aids patients. The true purpose of the invention of the drug was to help people while Martin Shkreli turned it into the opposite aspect—blackmail. Similar with the operation of black market, Martin Shkreli bought drugs at low price and sold them at high price which led to shortage. Some Aids patients can not afford such price and had no way for cure. The author clearly illustrated the purpose of Martin Shkreli’s action and concisely explained the relationship between the example and business ethic.

“A group of Sydney school students did not want to stand idly and they decided to solve it out.” Those students figured another way of making the drug by changing only one ingredient. They introduced this drug to market with a relatively lower price ($20). From my perspective, a good business should devote itself to charity, offer as more jobs as possible to help solve unemployment in the economy and follow market rules. Similarly, those students can earn great profit and bring benefits to society at the same time. The author believed that business ethics should be the responsibility to the whole society, the employers in the company, and the environment. I firmly agree with her ideal and I also believe companies should compete by following business rules and government rules.

To sum up, I do agree with the author’s opinions which also worth a good mark. It is a company’s obligation to help society while making profits at the same time.

Uber’s food delivery market

(New York Times)

As the originator of taxi app,Uber launched lunch delivery service in Los Angeles in 2014 and then UberEats expanded its service around the world.UberEats cooperates with many restaurants and finishes their delivery. The delivery of food is all done by Uber drivers and each delivery only takes few minutes.Just like taxi service, users can track orders by mobile phones.Drivers can choose whether provide delivery service or not and they will get 5 dollars for each delivery.

Though Uber is beset by scandals recently,UberEats still makes a great profits for the company. “As of July, UberEats was profitable in 27 of the 108 cities where it operated.”(New York Times).Despite it entered the market fairly late in comparison with its competitors,UberEats is still crushing the market.”As of the first quarter of 2017, it had more than 8 million active users in the U.S. alone and the number of trips taken by UberEats drivers grew by more than 24 times between March 2016 and March 2017.”(New York Times)Though facing the competition from Grubhub and Postmates and being Plagued by corporate scandals and publicity nightmare,UberEat still earned a place for itself in the market.Just as Jason Droege said,“There’s a global trend toward delivery,as people use mobile phones more and more for everything in their lives, we’re starting to see a secular change in how people eat.” Uber seized the market opportunity cleverly to earn profit. And UberEats also have several advantages over rivals.First of all,Uber has a network of more than two million drivers who can also deliver food.Secondly,Uber has spent the better part of a decade mapping cities and finding the most efficient routes, which may help the company improve delivery times.(google)

Out of question,UberEats built a great business model before entering the market.A business model covers four main areas of business:customers ,offer, infrastructure and financial viability. UberEats targeted on young generation who use phone more and more requently. And it has taken the partnership approach to speed up the growth of UbetEats and offer service in over hundred countries. As to the infrastructure, thanks to its existing presence in hundreds of cities across the globe, a gigantic network of 1.5 million drivers, and widespread brand recognition.Uber has a solid economic basis as the originator of taxi app,so it has the financial viability to operate the UberEats.

Entering a new market is difficult for many companies, especially when the market has fierce competition.Making a correct business model before entering the market is very important.Analyzing the market, setting target customers, using own advantages and cooperating with others and so on are all important.

Follow iphone’s trend?

Apple just had its press conference at 9.12 to reveal the brand new iphone 8 and iphone X and it became a hot topic beyond all doubt.Out of question,Apple used its typical selling strategy –planned obsolescence again. The new iphoneX kills the home button and scans your face to log.It reminds me of the missing headphone jack, which became a new trend after the release of iphone 7.For many people, using the new iphone becomes something which they can be proud of as they follow the fashion.

It’s really clear of Apple to release a new iphone every year and stop producting the old one, they already imagine it as future trash when they product the new one.Planned obsolescence helps Apple to make a lot of money and attracts people who want to follow fashion. It’s really a good business model for all the companies,it uses customer mentality well. The development of Apple also is the self breakthrough of the company as it pushes the development of the company’s technology and makes customers’ lives easier with the help of the new technology.

But in many people’s opinion,Apple’s action doesn’t obey the business ethics.First of all, they don’t consider the customers’ benefits and use their strategy to fool customers to buy new phone continually.Secondly, the never-ending updates damage the environment as well because of the production and disposal of iPhones.According to Freeman’s Stakeholder theory, companies should create value for customers, suppliers, employees, communities and financiers, shareholders, banks and others.I don’t think Apple apply to this theory, though they make a lot of money, they did’t think the benefits of many parts of stakeholders. As to the other part of the theory, suppliers shouldn’t just take orders and sell stuff but suppliers should try to make a business more innovative and creative. And I am pretty sure Apple accord with this part,as Apple is famous for innovation.

What business ethics is?In my opinion, company should put the customers’ profits at the first place, but I’m not saying the company’s benefit is not important, the combination of both sides’ benefits is the best. Moreover, the company should shoulder the social responsibility, the never-ending updates of Apple definitely will damage the environment. To a degree, the environmental deterioration is due to the development of many companies nowadays.Last but not least, increasing profits of company is a part of business ethics, the existence of companies helps the growth of economic development. The trend which made by apple actually helps the development of economics as they pay more taxes and create more job opportunities.
