Obama vs. Harper – The battle over Keystone XL

The Keystone XL Pipeline was submitted for approval by TransCanada Corporation(TRP) (https://www.google.ca/finance?cid=675214) almost 5 years ago and is still seeking approval. Earlier this year, the US said that the pipeline would have no increase on net carbon emissions. However, Obama stated that he felt that Canada could be doing more for the environment (before Keystone is passed). Ironically in the global scene, Canada has been perceived as doing more for the environment than the US.

Controversy surrounding this pipeline has been immense with huge investors getting in on the debate. Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a statement saying that he will only accept a yes citing economic and environmental benefits for both Canada and the USA if the pipeline is passed. This is an interesting statement as Harper has recently been criticized for his lack of push on for Keystone.

This week TransCanada(TRP) announced that they do not expect a decision from Obama until 2014. This has had a negative effect on the TransCanada brand and has been unfair to Canada given the dynamic of the US and Canada relationship.
