With Great Decentralization…Come Great Responsibility!

Decentralization is becoming more popular in organizations as it allows business’s to take advantage of efficient division of labour and allocating decision-making abilities across management. It is inspiring for employees as it allows them to feel motivated with increased involvement in the company, and while also sharing more of an intimate relationship with their managers and coworkers.  In this way, the employees experience Theory Y incentives and feel like an appreciated individual in their company.

As a student who has had a few part time job experiences, I feel like employment that is decentralized is very much internally motivating for an employee.  Manual restaurant labour such as at McDonalds, is very much centralized and it is the employees responsibility to perform his/her designated task with efficiency and he/she lacks any decision making status. As a past employee, this work gets very daunting and monotonous, and although decentralization here is unnecessary, I feel it is a factor that would motivate me to stay with a company if I felt that I was actually important to the firm and not just another worthless employee lost in the masses.
