Case Study 19: From Water to Wine: Water availability and competition in Sonoma County

  • What makes your case study a wicked problem?

What makes our case study a wicked problem is that there is scientific uncertainty as well as value uncertainty. The scientific uncertainty is that a huge amount of water is spent on producing wine, bringing a series of environmental problems. The value uncertainty is that even though it causes environmental problems, it also makes huge profits for local wine industy. Therefore, it is a wicked problem because it is diffcult to find a balance point between protecting the environment and developing local economy.

Describe in detail your mind map connections.

From what I found on Internet, water avability and competition have become a major issue in Sonoma County. According to my mind map, I then raised four questions as well as four categories. The first one is what. What is happening in Sonoma County? The key word related to that is “locol environment” because it is being damaged. I also put other ongoing issues under “what”, such as “locol ecnomy” and “new investment”. The second word is who. In this case study, we need to find out who receive benifits and who are expericing the deterioration of local environment.

Under “who” in my mind map, there is wine producers and locals. The third key word is why. It means that we need to find out the reason behind this phenomenon. As far as I can tell, the problem is that the amount of water is insufficient and therefore, there is a huge amount of input of water and comparatively, small amout of output of wine. It is also the scientific uncertainty that makes the case study a wicked problem. Finally, we have where, and it is obviously Sonoma County, where the society is in a dilemma.

In couclusion, there are four key words, and under each key word there are other words that are connected to them, whch are also related to the case study and things that are happening in Sonoma County.
