DANI 100: Elementary Danish I | Sample Syllabus

Term 1 | in-person | M/W/F 10:00 am – 11:00 am | 3 credits

Introduction to Danish language and culture at a beginner’s level.  Get to know Danish in a low-stress environment where you develop your language skills step by step. No traditional, high-stakes tests or exams. Focus is on spoken language, practical use and conversation through dialog practices, short presentations, and in-class exercises. Cultural topics include: Areas in Denmark, Hygge, the Danes’ odd relationship with their flag, the Danish monarchy and Christmas in Denmark.

DANI 110: Elementary Danish II | Sample syllabus

Term 2 | in-person | M/W/F 10:00 – 11:00 | 3 credits

Ability to communicate in everyday situations; speak and write about past events; familiarity with contemporary Danish culture. Improve your ability to express your own ideas and experiences by exploring social and political topics and traditions present in Denmark today. Cultural topics include: Living Danishly and design, translation, food culture and fastelavn.

PREREQUISITES: DANI 100 or equivalent.

DANI 200: Intermediate Danish I | SAmple syllabus

Term 1 | in-person | M/W/F 13:00 – 14:00 | 3 credits

Further developed speaking, reading and writing; express yourself in a variety of contexts; familiarity with contemporary Danish culture. Improve your ability to express your own ideas and experiences by exploring social and political topics and traditions present in Denmark today. Cultural topics include: Danish politics and trust (tillid), weather and climate, vacations and holidays, past times and traditions, work culture in Denmark.

DANI 210: Intermediate Danish II | Sample syllabus

Term 2 | in-person | M/W/F 11:00 – 12:00 | 3 credits

Competence in expressing yourself in a wide range of contexts, also in written form; familiarity with contemporary Danish culture. Get to know Danish in a low-stress environment where you develop your language skills step by step, alongside other students in a small, friendly and inclusive classroom. Cultural topics include: living in Denmark, being Danish, holidays and celebrations, højskole and fællesskab.

PREREQUISITES: DANI 200 or equivalent.
