Hello everyone! Welcome to Cheryl’s Blog! Let me introduce myself…
I am currently a fourth year student at UBC’s Vancouver campus. I am in the faculty of Arts and I am majoring in Psychology. I am from Hong Kong and have spent most of my life there. Four years ago, on a university tour I was astounded by the beauty of this city and therefore have decided to study here for my undergraduate studies.
Coming to university, I have been interested in learning new languages and have been particularly interested in learning about people in general. This has led me to take on a few language courses and some linguistic courses for the past few years. Furthermore, I have taken an array of psychology courses ranging from developmental, cognitive to personality /social psychology courses. For this current year, I will be focusing on social psychology courses as I have found my biggest interests in social psychology or developmental psychology courses.
As my academic interests lie mostly around social psychology or developmental psychology courses, in the near future, I am hoping to pursue a career in the education field. My current goal is to obtain an elementary teaching certificate after I graduate and hopefully to become an Elementary school teacher. In order to familiarize myself with children, I have been gaining job experience in an after-school childcare program and a special needs youth care program. For the after school childcare program, I mostly interact with children and guide them through creative and active activities. For the special needs youth program, I plan and deliver activities that targets different life skills such as money budgeting, social interaction and stress management. Through these jobs, I have learned how to build relationships with children of various age groups that have very different needs. There was definitely a learning curve in both jobs but over time I have acquired skills and techniques to which nowadays I would be able to enjoy my time and build relationships with children.
