On behalf of the CHLA SIG at SLAIS I would like to publicly acknowledge and congratulate a CHLA SIG at SLAIS member, Helen Halbert, on her great accomplishment of being nationally recognized and awarded the 2013 CHLA/ABSC Login Student Paper Prize for her paper, “The state of clinical librarianship in Canada: a review of literature, 1970-2013.” The paper discusses the history of clinical librarianship in Canada from 1970 to 2013.

Greetings from the new CHLA SIG executive for 2013-2014!

I wanted to introduce myself as the new chair of the Canadian Health Libraries Association Student Interest Group at SLAIS. Having worked in healthcare in my past life before SLAIS I knew that medical librarianship was a particular interest of mine coming into the program. To my great delight I discovered that there were others who organize opportunities for SLAIS students to interact with the specialized professional community of medical librarians through library tours, discussion panels, and other programming.

While you surely had a general interest in librarianship or information studies more broadly when applying to SLAIS, once you’ve begun your studies you realize that within library and information studies there is a great variety of potential careers as a librarian or information professional. Getting involved in the Canadian Health Libraries Association Student Interest Group at SLAIS and attending some of our events or meetings is a great way to one potential career path as a librarian.

Our group is also very open to any MAS students who would like to explore the role of an information professional in the medical field. Don’t shy away because it says “libraries” in the name of our association!!

Finally, we are still looking to fill a number of positions on our executive board for the 2013-2014 term. If you would like to really get involved in CHLA SIG at SLAIS we would love to find a space for you.

Wishing you all the best in the coming year of studies!!

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (the “College”) was established by the provincial legislature in 1886 as the licensing and regulatory body for all physicians and surgeons in the province. The College is governed by provincial legislation that entrusts the College with the responsibility to establish, monitor and enforce high standards of qualification and medical practice across the province.

What’s new in 2013

Check out this great opportunity to learn about health librarianship!

The SLAIS Special Libraries Association is hosting a panel discussion which features a few librarians that are working in health-related areas. The panel discussions are always a great way to learn more about the field. You’ll even have the opportunity to ask your questions. It’s happening this coming Wednesday at 11:30am. Find more information about the featured librarians (and how to register) here: http://ubcsla.wordpress.com/

Also: the first CHLA meeting of 2013 happens this Wednesday at 5pm in the Trail Room (Room 491 right next to the SLAIS lounge). We’ll be talking about an exciting event that will be happening soon — so don’t forget to mark your calendars!
