Example 24 – Undergraduate science student

Source text:

The Goluszek court was confronted with a male plaintiff who had never been married and had never lived anywhere but in his mother’s home. Goluszek was surrounded by makes in his work environment and the men constantly teased him about not having a girlfriend and not engaging in sexual activities. They periodically showed him pictures of nude women, told him they would arrange sex for him, accused him of being gay or bisexual and made other sex-related comments. Virtually nothing was done when Goluszek reported this activity to his supervisors. In fact, they joined in the fray.

Writer’s text:

For instance, Goluszek in 1988 was victimized as he was constantly teased for his lifestyle (Bennet-Alexander 1998 931-932) 2. Not only did his co-workers accuse him of homosexuality, but they also showed him pictures of nude women and offensively offered him sex arrangements. Instead of stopping ht harassment, reports of the incidents merely prompted supervisors to join in. Through the brief narration of the incident, it is clear that male discrimination exists. Firstly, as a result of a comparison to the stereotypical depiction of the independent dominant male figure, Goluszek is immediately seen as a deviant since he lives with his mother, has no girlfriend, and lacks sexual experiences.

Writer’s comment:

I think I read it and then I just wrote it in my words. So I think I paraphrased it… But how was I supposed to cite it? Or else I would have to cite every single sentence. I think it’s kind of distracting.

  1. You do not have to cite every single sentence, but you do need a citation after presenting data or ideas that are not your own. Actually, it seems like all of the information in this paragraph comes from your source, so you should cite the source at the end of this paragraph. Also, your citation form is a little off. Because you are not quoting the source text (you are summarizing and paraphrasing), you do not need page numbers. You can include those in your bibliography at the end. A more appropriate in-text citation would look like this: (Bennet-Alexander, 1998). (A) graduate in Education
