CityReach Care Society is a non-profit organization located in East Vancouver dedicated to helping low-income families. They have a variety of outreach programs such as a food bank, an out of school care program, a nutritional education program (edukitchen), and a legal clinic. CityReach’s vision is “to enable children, youth and families to develop and grow both as individuals and as a community, through programs and activities offered in a safe and caring environment.”
Our project is to build an athletics supplies storage container, as well as a shelving area for their out of school care program. The storage container will contain sporting gear, including balls, bean bags, and hockey sticks. The box needs to have wheels, a lid, and a lock. The dimensions are negotiable, but it should be able to fit through a doorway (28″ wide). There are 2 recessed areas in the walls that CityReach is hoping to take advantage of. We have measured the dimensions, and are hoping to build shelving there.
We have decided that wood would be the easiest material to work with. Michelle mentioned that CityReach has a strong relationship with Rona and may be able to procure some donated materials for the project. We do have some basic tools, but we currently do not have access to a power saw and a router. These tools could possibly be borrowed from Broadway Church, which is a huge supporter of CityReach.
Our next steps will be:
- design the box and the shelving
- make a list of materials and tools needed
- make a schedule for implementation
- come up with a plan to incorporate the children in the project
After visiting the site on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 our team is very excited to participate in this project. It will be a great chance for us to give back to our community!
Very nice! Thanks for all the background and the clear description of the project goals.
Now that you have met Michelle, please invite her to join the blog. Also, please invite Joe if he does not already have access.
