Final Thoughts

Our evaluation of CIMAD and the benefits of circle hooks has led us to believe that the use of circle hooks can have a positive effect, on a global scale, on fishing and sea turtle conservation. Circle hooks are shown to have great potential in aiding the conservation and recovery of sea turtle populations. It is important to assess and reassess objectives of a conservation effort in order to increase its chance of sustained success. As we have highlighted, biological aspects, such as reducing sea turtle by-catch, requires continual monitoring, assessment, and experimentation; the economic value of a maintained or increased target catch per unit effort is fundamental; community involvement and acceptance of conservation measures and awareness is essential for social strength; and proper governance and management are required for a lasting presence and continued success. For circle hooks to achieve their maximum potential in sea turtle conservation effort, these four aspects must be fulfilled and balanced.
