Predict (Prior-Knowledge):

Whole group discussion: As a class, generate questions about height using the question generating strategy outlined in Rothstein and Santana’s (2011), Make Just one Change: Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions.

The teacher will write the words Measuring Height in the centre of a large paper. Students generate as many questions as possible about the centre topic. The teacher records their questions exactly as stated, and works with students to turn any statements into questions. An example of possible questions are:

Why do we need to measure our height?

What is height?

What can we use to measure our height?

What is the best way to measure height?

Small Group Activity:

Placemat brainstorm:

In a small group of 3 to 4 students record how you could best measure the height of each student in your group on a large sheet of paper. Each student writes and draws their ideas in their own section using their own colour of marker.

When you are finished, share your answers with your group and record any ideas that are similar in the centre of the paper (your teacher or parent volunteer may help you with this step). As a group, decide how you will measure the height of students in your group.
