Botulinum Toxin Testing in Animals

Botox, or Botulinum toxin type A is a drug made from a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. This toxin that temporary removes facial wrinkles is the same toxin that causes food poisoning, called botulism.

Doctors use botox to treat health problems such as:

  • severe underarm sweating
  • cervical dystonia – a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscles to contract
  • blepharospasm – uncontrollable blinking
  • strabismus – misaligned eyes

Botox injections are administered so that certain muscles will be weakened or paralyzed by blocking certain nerves. The effects of the drug is temporary and lasts for about 3 to 4 months. Like most drugs, there are side effects when botox is injected; this can include pain at the injection site, flu-like symptoms, headaches, and upset stomach.
