I had the pleasure of being introduced to this Video Game which was developed in collaboration with the Inupiat, an Alaskan Native People. We’ve spoken a lot about the themes of identity, culture, language, and tradition and the importance of ensuring that Indigenous peoples are given the opportunity to decide what is shared, how it is shared, and to whom it is shared. The link below will give you an idea of what this game entails and if you can, I would invite you to play. All the images were done in collaboration with Alaskan Elders and artists, which adds to the authenticity of this game.

Never Alone leverages the power of videogames to share, celebrate and extend culture. These World Games will empower indigenous communities around the world to share their stories in an authentic, engaging, and entertaining way.”

  1. Hi Sasha, great find! My son and I watched the video for the game and will try playing it when we are back home. Looks fantastic.

    1. Yes you definitely should! The trailer doesn’t do the game justice! I had my students play this and they LOVEd it – and that’s coming from a bunch of Amoung Us and surviv.io players!

  2. Sasha, it is great to see how indigenous game developers are overturning the prevalent video games’ model perpetuating negative stereotypes and violent colonial representations.

    1. Yes it is! I would hope that there are more games in the works so we can see less of those negative stereotypes and more authentic representations!

  3. The art is beautiful! It reminded me of bone carvings and, after reading a review, it sounds like scrimshaw is exactly what they were going for!

    1. Isn’t it!! I was immediately drawn to the artwork the first time I was introduced to the game and playing it is even BETTER!!
