Chiropractic Treatment for Migraines

Migraines: so many people think that you’re just a sissy with a bad headache, but migraines are much more serious than that. Migraines can make it impossible to function normally for days on end, and they’re notoriously difficult to treat. What’s worse, they keep coming back, and they’re accompanied by a host of other symptoms ranging from nausea and vomiting to hallucinations in some particularly bad cases. Afterwards, you feel weak and exhausted, and need a couple of days to recover. What causes migraines, and could a chiropractor at BC Back Clinic help you to overcome this painful condition?

Causes of migraines

A lot of people find that certain circumstances trigger migraines, but medical science doesn’t understand migraines fully. There are two theories that are quite widely accepted.

One of these theories is based on the idea that arterioles become constricted, limiting oxygen delivery. In response, the body produces serotonin that dilates the blood vessels, and this causes the intense headache.

The other theory is that the nervous system undergoes rapid changes in activity, again, serotonin is believed to play a role.

Whatever the cause, it is clear that there is some sort of imbalance in the body, and chiropractors are often able to help migraine sufferers by realigning the posture and dealing with muscle tension. They will also help you to identify, and either avoid or deal with, the triggers commonly associated with your migraines.

Will chiropractic treatment cure your migraines?

Nothing works for everyone, but the success rate of chiropractic care in the treatment of migraines is excellent. In clinical trials at Macquarie University, 72% of migraine sufferers said that they noticed an improvement after receiving treatments from a chiropractor.

22% of the trial participants noticed a “substantial reduction” in their symptoms. The lead author of the study says that this group was the one that had been experiencing migraines for the longest period.

50% said that they noticed an improvement. They didn’t get migraines as often, and the migraines were less severe. That meant that they were able to reduce their intake of strong painkillers, many of which have undesirable side effects.

What does the treatment consist of?

As you would expect, chiropractic manipulation is the primary treatment used to help migraine sufferers, but chiropractors will also give you exercises that will help you to improve your posture.

Migraines are often associated with stress and other triggers, so the chiropractor will go through these with you and help you to find ways to minimize your chances of getting a migraine in the first place. Soft tissue therapy and hot packs are often helpful.

Depending on the results of your chiropractic assessment, a treatment regimen will be formulated and applied to suit your specific case. It really is a holistic approach, and with such a high success rate, migraine sufferers are increasingly turning to chiropractors to help them overcome a recurrent problem that no pill or potion can cure.

Get yourself on the road to recovery

Making an appointment with your chiropractor is the first step towards a 72% chance of either eliminating or reducing your migraine discomfort. Arm yourself with all the relevant information about your migraines: how often you have them, any trigger factors that you suspect may play a role, and what medications you currently use.

Your chiropractor will examine you thoroughly and recommend treatment based on the issues he or she picks up during the examination. We cannot guarantee you’ll never have a migraine again, but there’s an excellent chance of reducing the frequency and intensity of your migraines.
