It has taken me quite a while to decide what my “object” should be for this final project. For a while, I thought I would choose one of the first edition Oscar Wilde texts, but, in a shocking turn of events, I changed my mind.
In our first seminar class, the object that caught my attention was the massive portfolio of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, illustrated by Salvador Dalí. I found these illustrations to be unbelievably beautiful, their colours overwhelming but amazing.
Last week, during our self-directed research class, I decided to call up this same portfolio to see if it still had the same effect on me. I accidentally called up a different version, the 2015 “150th Anniversary Edition” – also with Dalí’s illustrations. This turned out to be a happy accident, however, because this edition contains two essays that contain information about the connections between the author and the illustrator. As this was really where my interest lay, it cemented my decision to choose the portfolio as my object. I’ll also be using the 150th Anniversary Edition as my main source of background information.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy!
