Today I taught my first planned socials lesson, which I got filmed as well as a formal observation done. During the lesson I was a little worried that the students were being to loud but when I took a step back I realized that yes they may be a bit loud but they are working in groups so that is expected. I was also very impressed with the self discovery that was happening and that the groups weren’t bothering each other. We discussed what good group work looked like before I split them up and they hit every point that I thought of when I came up with an idea of good group work. After seeing the way the students work in pairs during my math lesson I created groups prior to my socials lesson carefully thinking about who works well together and the various skill levels. Overall I felt good about my socials lesson as all the students were able to participate and complete the activity. I think that it was a good starting lesson and that my next socials lesson will be a good follow up lesson that will reinforce what they did and learned.
Great to hear that this one went so well! Discovery is great and interactive group work is often a little louder than you might expect. As long as the students are on task and learning, a little extra volume is OK.
