CREATIVITY

Submission 2
June 18, 2013

The following lesson samples were submitted to the Creative Thinking Continua Committee.

A balance must be maintained between the benefits of posting student work and protecting their identity. I have posted enough of each lesson to give a flavour of the task and outcome.

Creative Thinking Continua Committee

I met with a group of teachers and Sherri Bell, Deputy Superintendent School District 61, to discuss creative thinking and to follow up the new competencies direction established in BC’s Plan for Education. We met with Anita Chapman, an assessment expert appointed by the Ministry, in April and May to develop student tasks, collect and analyze student work samples and performance, and develop a continua for creative thinking. The work will continue in the Fall.

This first submission asked students to address the question, “How can we safely transport our salmon fry to Goldstream?”

The task and outcomes are described in the lesson plan.

Our full submission included student posters, photos of students creating their posters, and movies of students presenting their posters. Photos and movies have not been posted but the posters can be enjoyed.

New Activities
April 10, 2013

I recently received word I have been accepted to the District Technology Committee (Greater Victoria School District) as a teacher representative for the Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association. I anticipate an interesting time on this committee. The role of Wi-Fi in schools in being hotly debated without much input from teachers and I always like to add my two cents worth. The use of technology in schools seems to polarize viewpoints and opinions; I hope we can find some middle ground!

I have also agreed to work with the Ministry of Education committee developing the “Creative Thinking Cross-Curricular Competency Continua”. I hope the work is as important as the title sounds. There is some really great thinking in BC’s Education Plan and I look forward to fleshing it out and making it real for students and teachers without a recycling of IRP’s and PLO’s.
