Enhancing Learning Celebration
May 28, 2013

At the end of the school year all of the teams who have carried out enhancing learning projects participate in a  mini-conference, cum science fair, to present the scope and results of their projects.

A description of the purpose, method and results of the iPad Project and the Mathletics Project can be viewed by clicking on: iPad Project Results

Pilot Project
February 2013

An additional Enhancing Learning was developed in response to information received about the Mathletics Program.

The response to this initial project was favourable with students and parents reporting increased interest and motivation in students. A group of parents not involved in the project requested involvement for their students. Working with the Parent Advisory Council, a secondary project was developed.

Mathletics
November 23, 2013

Early in the school year, I received information about Mathletics from my school principal. We discussed the possibility of using it at Oaklands and agreed to present the possibility of a pilot project to the staff.

We held an in-service on Mathletics in my classroom on November 23, 2012. About 10 teachers attended a very informative session led by Debbie Nordstrom. I was pleased that we could work out how to have her live from Calgary. Beam My Screen and a Skype connection helped – thanks to my principal and school tech. Lot’s of positive talk about the possibilities of Mathletics for our school. Most of the interest was around student motivation, program differentiation, and program management for teachers. We hope to set up a pilot in January to run for a month before we consider committing to the program. Lots of talk about teaching and learning….a pretty successful professional development activity!

The iPad Project
September 17, 2013

Every year, School District 61 (Greater Victoria) provides grants to support learning at the school and classroom level. Enhancing Learning Funds are available to groups of teachers, supported by a school administrator, to conduct action research projects. Each project is typically awarded a grant of $ 1200.00 to support teacher release and collaboration. In the 2012/2013 school year the district awarded grants totally some $ 84,000.00.

Following up an meeting about iPads held on June 12, 2012, a group of interested teachers met to discuss and develop plans for the iPad Project. Initially we developed the following plans:

Over-all Enhancing Learning Plan

Specific Enhancing Learning Plans

Key roles and responsibilities were defined and a timeline was developed. View the notes from this session by clicking on the link: iPad Project Application.
